RED Dragon overview

What originally captivated us about RED cameras in general were the numerous new options they gave to independent filmmakers. Options such as easily switching your lens mounts from Canon, Nikon, Leica or cinema PL mount. To this day many manufacturers haven't implemented the revolutionary changes RED brought to the industry way back in 2007. The original RED One 4K released in 2007 is still relevant all these years later. RED still keeps innovating with the release of their new 6K RED DRAGON® sensor, which can capture over 9x more pixels than HD. Unrivaled detail and impressive native exposure eclipses 35mm film in both latitude and image density. When shooting at 6K resolution full frame, the sensor captures a whopping 19.4 megapixels per frame at 6144 x 3160. You can capture an amazing 100 fps at this 6K resolution, 1-120fps at 5K or 4.5K, 1-150 fps at 4K and upto 300fps at 2K.

We all know that its not just about resolution, the RED Dragon also offers 16.5 stops of Dynamic Range which eclipses film. You can also combine the native 16.5 stops of Dynamic Range in the sensor with a high dynamic range recording feature giving you six more stops of latitude. All this means you can capture a wider range of exposure in your scene. Shoot your talent from inside of a dimly lit interior and still capure the bright highlights of the clouds and sky through the windows or doors. With the RED Dragon they have gone even further and improved their color science which now shows beautiful skintones. Your image is only as good as the color science behind it. The new RED DRAGON™ sensor features their most advanced color science yet, taking advantage of vastly improved dynamic range and low-light capabilities. Skin tones are softer, primary colors are more vibrant, and subtle color variations are discernibly remarkable. EPIC DRAGON cameras capture images that are true to life, with colors that can only be described as "brilliant".

The camera does all this being only five pounds, which is perfect for all sorts of mobile operations such as flying on drones or on gimbal stabilizers like the DJI Ronin and Movi. If that wasn't enough, it can shoot in RAW with an impressive compression method that manages to keep the file sizes down while maintaining impressive high quality. Almost a decade later after RED released their first 4K camera, many of its competitors haven't managed to release any compression technology which even comes close.
